Yes to Remodel

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) claims that the Remodeling Market Index (RMI) has held constant at 57 in the fourth quarter of 2013. This is the same level as the third quarter of 2013 and the highest reading since the first quarter of 2004.

A Remodeling Market Index above 50 means that more people that remodel report market activity is higher than compared to the prior quarter, than report it is lower. The RMI overall average ratings of current remodeling activity that indicate future remodeling.

Reviving Detroit

There’s something in the air in downtown Detroit. Old, run down skyscrapers have new life. People are milling in the streets on lunch breaks. Start ups are moving to the city at a surprising rate. Downtown Detroit feels alive – if only between 9 to 5. There’s one man primarily responsible for much of the urban renewal: Dan Gilbert, founder and chairman of Quicken Loans. Gilbert is the chairman and founder of Rock Ventures and Quicken Loans Inc., and has been investing heavily in the bankrupt city of Detroit since early 2011. He has bought more than 40 downtown properties. Including a $600 million purchase of Greektown Casino and Hotel. The local people call it the "Dan Gilbert Effect".

Dan founded Rock Financial in 1985.

Sign of Recovery

For many years banks had a firm hold on the weak housing market. The majority of the sellers either were bankers unloading foreclosed properties or people who couldn't pay their mortgage and needed assistance from their banks. About 70% of used-home sales are now traditional deals. That's up from 51% a year ago. This doesn't necessarily mean the housing market is fully recovered from the recession. Many investors are still buying and selling properties. The shift to traditional deals from short sales and foreclosures, reflects the ongoing economic recovery.
