Cozy and Colorful
With a new year comes new trends in home design and decorating. Among them: paler walls contrasted with colorful furniture, and plenty of personal expression. It's time to get your love for colours out. Enough of those boring beige decent shades. Paint your place with colour along with playful and fun loving shades, and sit back and watch your walls come to life.
According to Pantone the colour for 2014 is radiant orchid, which is said to inspire confidence and exude great joy, love and health. Radiant orchid is also said to ecourage creativity and originality. A great way to introduce this hot new colour trend in your home is with toss pillows and even small appliances like a Keurig coffeemaker or toaster. You can add splashes of this colour with artwork and patterned rugs which will not take over the room with one color.
Metallics are a growing trend in home decor and they will continue to grow in popularity in 2014. Warm metallics are surfacing more and more this year. Metallics are also appearing in unexpected places like woven in carpet. Toss pillows and fabrics are also a great way to add a hint of sparkle to a space. Mixing metals is also a trend that will continue to appear this year. More than ever, metallics are treated as neutrals in the room. Copper is the hottest favorite on the list of home décor ideas for 2014. These can be added to newly designed chairs, tables, stools, and other furniture.
Don't be shy of using velvets and satins this season. In 2014, new home décor ideas are all about bringing a royal, majestic touch to upholstery. This will also give a soft and plush feel to your home. Using indigo, navy blue, blushing pinks or even gray with cushions and sheet. Mixing patterns within a space and also within one piece of furniture is very much on trend for 2014. The key to mixing patterns is to work within the same colour palette and pay close attention to scale. Mix larger scale patterns with smaller ones so the blend is not too overwhelming.
Light woods are in for 2014. Flooring is moving away from dark espresso and black and taking on a new life with lighter stains and finishes. Furniture is also incorporating light woods. People are turning away from dark flooring now because it can show more scratches and dust and a paler wood can help hide the dirt and scratches.
Just because something is "in" doesn't mean you have to like it. If you are intrigued by a new trend, go with it. But, if it doesn't feel right, then forget about it. The best and most comfortable homes reflect the personalities of those who live in them.
